XM Radio

I've since discovered that Sirius satellite radio happens to have channels that I'd be much more inclined to listen to. Jam On 17 is a remarkable station that happens to cater to the likes of me. Anyway I'm no longer interested in things satellite, I'm making do with more down to Earth type things. I picked up a little mp3 player after christmas and have since been downloading all manner of podcasts and listening to them at work. I must be getting old, realizing that you'd rather listen to the geek equivalent of AM talk radio gives me chills... so I put a few albums on for good measure.

Original post follows....

A while ago now I was at a party at a friends house. One of the people I met happened to have this XM device with him, we checked the score of the Red Sox game with it. Anyway we were talking about it and he mentioned that there was a 30-day trial on-line. So today I checked the XM site and discovered that the 30-day trial was only available if you had recently purchased a Dell... crap. There is however a 3-day free trial and I signed up for that. Which is handy because now when the trial is up it'll be time to try one of my Homestyle Dill Pickles. I'm not too impressed with the internet service they're letting me try, the player kept buffering every song... sometimes twice a song, on cable! I was still impressed by the device that guy had, it had news, sports, stocks... all available right there at the touch of your fingers. Now I've seen this peice of digital wizardry for sale at around $300, way out of affordability reach. But I did see some other one for $50, I'm wondering if it can display the news too, because then I'd be all set.

In a pickle

Today I did something I would never have guessed I'd ever do. I made pickles.

My Homemade Pickles
Homemade Pickles

We'll see if they're any good in a few days but there they sit, pickling in the homemade brine. Here's the deal my girlfriends father grows a lot of vegetables out in his backyard and we had a bunch of cucumbers to bring home. I mean there's a vast quantity of cucumbers fighting for fridge space at this very moment. Anyway, we get to talking about something or other and all of a sudden we have the ingredients for homemade pickles, including the jar. We just had to take another little trip outside to collect some dill. I guess I'm supposed to check them every day to see if they taste right because once you refridgerate them the pickling process stops. I was told it usually takes three days, I think I'll just wait the three days. I'll have to let the readers of my blog know how they came out.

‘Hot Coffee’

It has been a while now since the whole 'Hot Coffee' debate has flared up and I figure it is about time that I chime in with my opinion.

Nervous Reflexes and podcasting

Firstly, I successfully fricasseed the original nervousreflex.com site. I had uploaded the updates for Mambo's phpBB plugin, and this caused me to start getting errors with the logins as well. I did use the plugin as part of mambo, the plugin is what managed all the user accounts and noone was able to login anymore. I have a copy of the original phpBB files around here somewhere but I decided to have another look at the available content management systems. I found one called php-fusion, and I like it much better already... maybe not better but I like the look and feel of it a little more. One big plus for php-fusion is that it come with forums at part of the system, which is where I destroyed my Mambo install.

By the way if you are looking for a cms of your own go to: www.opensourcecms.com
This place has a list of all kinds of content management systems that are open source. The site also lets you demo them as well so you can play with both the user and admin functionalities.

Secondly, Podcasting. A medium I have enjoyed for a while now has set its little hooks into me. I am currently drafting up plans to start my own podcast cover a wide array of topic. I'm also planning on having a video feed as well, even though I'm not much to look at. I'm looking into getting a co-host as well. More on this as it develops.
